How hardening work connects to your insurance
California's Safer from Wildfires regulation requires admitted insurers to offer discounts to homeowners who document specific mitigation work — things like ember-resistant vents, a Class A roof, cleared defensible space and a noncombustible five-foot perimeter. The California FAIR Plan offers its own hardening discounts on Dwelling Fire policies.
The discount is usually not applied automatically. You generally have to tell your insurer what you did and show photos or receipts, which is why it helps to keep documentation from the start. A Wildfire Prepared Home designation from IBHS is a third-party verified standard that major California insurers recognize.
Discount amounts vary by insurer and the rules change often. Confirm what your own carrier offers before you spend money on the basis of an expected discount.
If you cannot do the work yourself
Plenty of this work involves ladders, roofs and heavy brush. Businesses markedSenior-Friendly do the physical work themselves and will help with the paperwork rather than handing you a list of tasks. Those markedGrant Experience have worked with homeowners using grant funding before.
